Friday 11th | Ixworth - Halifax. Evening spent in the Bix Six then slept at Max Uttley's |
Saturday 12th | Halifax to Ballachulish |
Sunday 13th | Climbed into Coire nam Beith: good snow Practised ice axe arrest and belaying with "dead men" Climbed up to Bidean nam Biam (53). My first winter Munro. |
Monday 14th | John Colton, Godfrey, Richard, Ashley Maurice and I walked up into the "Lost Valley": Allt Coire Gabhail. Maurice and Ashley descended to retrieve his helmet. Continued to summit of Stob Coire nan Lochan. Very cold. Posed for a photo Descended down Broad Gulley. Played on an "otter slide." John Colton climbed some ice. |
Tuesday 15th | Fresh snow, high avalanche risk so stayed off the hills.Played with axe and crampons on an ice fall in Glen Nevis. Walked along to three strand bridge. Afternoon in Fort William then back via Nether Lochaber Hotel to celebrate Richard's "Birthday". A grand evening. |
Wednesday 16th | A sunny day. Mark and co. set off to climb North East Buttress on the Ben. Godfrey, Richard, Adrian, Maurice, Ashley, Simon and I set out from Nevis YHA via Lochan Meall ant-Suidhe (Half-way Lochan) into Allt a Mhuilinn Up to Carn Dearg Meadhonach. Maurice turned back. Continued onto Carn Mor Dearg (54) Saw other party on N.E.Buttress "More Beer!" Walked round Carn Mor Dearg Arete and up to Ben Nevis (repeat of 5). Grand Watched helicopter filming for a while. A great winter round. Back via tourist track and a curry in Fort William. Girls from Norfolk did not return from their walk! |
Thursday 17th | Another bright day. Girls had still not appeared. Helped mountain rescue to search Ben Bheither (repeat of 44 and 45) with Donald Girls were found by helicopter. Both well, big relief. We continued the traverse of the hill. A grand day after all. |
Friday 18th | Cloudy. Into Coire nan Lochan. Climbed Dorsal Arete (Grade 2) with Godfrey |
Saturday 19th | . . . . . . . . . . and so back to Suffolk |
