Day Hills Climbed (Munro Count)
Friday 17th Training day at work. Left at 5:30 p.m., picked up Mark and onto the West Suffolk P.D.C.
Travelled up to Max's by mini bus. Big Six, beer, whiskey, bed.
Saturday 18th Halifax to Ballachulish
Sunday 19th Party consisting of: Godfrey, Pat, Ashley, Simon, Ben, John, Eddie, and I.
Drove to Kinlochleven and past the army doing strange things to each other.
Went up to Mamore Lodge. It started snowing.
Walked up to the saddle below Na Gruagaichean (NN194655)
John the scout had trouble with his crampons. Severe gale / blizzard conditions.
I must buy some goggles. Descended back down the way we had come.
Monday 20th Mark, Nigel, Ben and I. Set off from Polldubh in Glen Nevis. Forest walk to Allt a Choire Dheirg.
West on to ridge up to Mullach Nan Coirean (69). Hard going on soft snow and strong winds.
Came off east into Allt a Choire Dheirg. Rough route through forest back to Polldubh.
A good day.
Tuesday 21st An abortive trip to Cairngorms. Wild weather. Snowball fight in Glen Roy.
John the scout adviced Mark on his driving. We went quite quickly.
Wednesday 22nd Took gondoler / chair lift up Anoch Mor. "It was wild"~ blizard conditions: a white out.
New goggles proved essential. Walked across to Meall Beag then continued by contouring below
the crags to a buttress. Relatively easy climbing but Nigel found some difficult ice.
Continued roped. Lunched huddled by a fence. No sign of Mark or Ben. Continued in wild
conditions to the summit of Anoch Mor(70). Good navigation practice. Came down via the
ski piste (no skiers!) A good day.
Thursday 23rd Godfrey, John, Eddie, Me.
Anoch Mor ~ Gondoler ~ chair lift. Climbed to the summit of Anoch Mor (again)
Godfrey lost a glove (which we later found out had fallen onto Ben's head!) Climbed over to
Anoch Beag (71). On the way down John (the scout) fell and bounced. Luckily he bounced into
me some way below and stopped! Godfrey gave Alison Hargreaves some sound advice. We
waited for her to come back down again and apologised. She slowed down considerably so
that we could walk with her for a short way. Back up to Anoch Mor and off down the piste.
Alison skied past. Martin was late off the hill.
Friday 24th Ben and I. Alpine style. Anoch Eagach
The ridge was in full winter condition. A grand traverse. Repeat of Munros:
Sgor Nam Fiannaidth (51) and Meall Dearg (50) Came off down slopes just before
the Clachaig Gulley. An interesting route on dodgy snow. Had a welcome drink in the
Clachaig. Evening meal at Ballachulish Ferry Hotel ~ wonderful fish soup.
Martin was very late off the hill.
Saturday 25th . . . . . . . . . . and so back to Suffolk
